Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding at Waterloo Market on Tuesday, June 23, destroying trading stalls and affecting the businesses of several traders.
Witnesses at the scene reported that two people were swept away by the fast-moving floodwater, leading community members to begin rescue efforts.
According to eyewitnesses, the floodwater quickly entered the market area, reaching knee level and forcing traders and customers to struggle through the strong current.
“The water has gone with two people. Some people have gone to rescue them now,” one eyewitness was heard saying.
Another woman at the scene raised concerns that a child may have been among those carried away by the flood.
The flooding brought business activities at the market to a standstill, with many traders, mostly women, trying to save their goods, including food items and other belongings. Several stalls were reportedly damaged, with some traders losing their goods and sources of income.
“More than ten people’s stalls are already gone. One man and several women have lost everything,” a person at the scene said.
As community members continue efforts to assist those affected, traders are calling on the government and relevant authorities to provide urgent support.
They are also appealing for improvements to the drainage system around the market, which they say contributes to repeated flooding during heavy rains.
“We are asking the central government to please come to our aid. We need help. Look at the whole market, everything is ruined,” one trader pleaded.
