A devastating road accident in Guinea-Conakry has claimed the lives of seven people and left 13 others seriously injured after a commercial passenger vehicle travelling to Freetown, Sierra Leone, collided with a tanker.
The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, along the Guinean transit route. It involved a Gambian-registered commercial vehicle, registration number KM 7387 G, which was travelling from Kanifing Municipality in The Gambia to Freetown, carrying 20 passengers.
According to reports, the passenger vehicle crashed into a tanker bearing registration number AR 7222, resulting in the deaths of seven occupants, including the driver.
The General Transport Union (GTU) of The Gambia confirmed that the deceased driver was not a Gambian national.
Two Gambian nationals, a man and a woman, were among the passengers who survived the crash. They are currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Guinea alongside the other injured victims.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns over the safety of cross-border road transport along the Guinea corridor, a key transit route used by commercial vehicles and passengers travelling between The Gambia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
Following the accident, the GTU activated its emergency response mechanism and said it is working closely with the Gambian Consular Office in Conakry, Guinean authorities, and transport unions to provide assistance to the victims and their families.
The union also disclosed that one of its members, Mr. Pa Gaye, who was travelling along the same route to Freetown, is at the accident scene helping to coordinate emergency response efforts and liaising with local authorities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the GTU Executive Committee expressed gratitude to the Government of The Gambia, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, for its prompt intervention. The union also commended the Guinean authorities and local transport unions for their swift support following the tragedy.
“The Executive Committee extends its deepest condolences to the families, relatives, and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident,” the statement read.
The GTU further urged commercial drivers and all road users to exercise greater caution, strictly adhere to traffic regulations, and prioritise safety, particularly during long-distance cross-border journeys.
As of Wednesday evening, the 13 injured passengers remained under medical care in Guinea while authorities continued to monitor the situation.
