Sierra Leone’s Minister of Internal Affairs, AIG (Rtd.) Morie Lengor Esq., has urged Defence and Security Chiefs of the Mano River Union (MRU) to take decisive steps to eliminate tensions along the sub-regional borders, demilitarise Yenga, and ensure the free movement of people, goods and services across member states.
Minister Lengor made the call while delivering the keynote address at the Sub-Regional Meeting of the Mano River Union Technical Committee on Peace, Security and Defence, held at the Brookfields Hotel in Freetown on Friday, July 10.
Addressing senior defence and security officials from the MRU member states, the Minister emphasised the need for sustained regional cooperation to preserve peace, strengthen security, and address longstanding border-related concerns.
He stressed that Yenga should be freed from military occupation as part of broader efforts to promote stability and reinforce confidence among neighbouring countries.
Lengor further underscored the importance of removing barriers that hinder the smooth movement of people, goods and services within the MRU region, noting that peaceful and secure borders are essential for regional integration, economic growth and stronger cooperation among member states.
The meeting brought together defence and security stakeholders from across the Mano River Union to deliberate on key peace and security issues affecting the sub-region and to explore collaborative approaches aimed at enhancing stability and cross-border cooperation.
Further details from the meeting are expected to be released.
