A commercial kekeh rider has been arrested by police officers at the Ferry Junction checkpoint after he was allegedly found in possession of an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Badamasi, was apprehended on Thursday, July 16, 2026, during a routine security operation conducted by officers stationed at the checkpoint.

According to the Sierra Leone Police, the checkpoint commander, Sub-Inspector Mustapha Sesay, became suspicious after the suspect allegedly attempted to conceal a bag underneath a parked vehicle. A subsequent search of the bag reportedly led to the discovery of the firearm and ammunition.

Police said Badamasi was immediately taken into custody and transferred to Ross Road Police Station, where he remains while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapon .

The Ferry Junction checkpoint was established by the Local Unit Commander of the Harbour Police Division, CSP Fayia David Joshua, as part of efforts to improve security monitoring and prevent criminal activities within the area.

The Freetown-East Regional Commander, AIG Brima Kanneh, praised the officers involved in the arrest, describing their actions as a reflection of vigilance and commitment to maintaining public safety. He encouraged police personnel to continue carrying out proactive operations to protect lives and property.

Residents familiar with the suspect said Badamasi works as a commercial kekeh rider and is often seen around the PWD Junction Ataya Base. They described him as a quiet person, adding that his arrest has come as a surprise to some members of the community.

Police investigations are ongoing to establish how the firearm was obtained, the possible purpose for which it was intended, and whether other persons may be linked to the case.

The Sierra Leone Police have reiterated their commitment to tackling the illegal possession of firearms and ensuring the safety and security of citizens across the country.
