On Wednesday, 26th and Thursday, 27th February, 2025, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio successfully distributed free sanitary pads and shoes to thousands of school going pupils across Bo and Pujehun Districts, respectively.
The events, which took place at Coronation Field in Bo District, and Zimmi, in Pujhun District, aimed to enhance the health and educational access of local students.
Reportedly, the initiative was part of Dr. Bio’s ongoing campaign to eliminate barriers that prevent girls from attending school, particularly during their menstrual periods.
By providing sanitary pads, the First Lady emphasized her commitment to ensuring that girls can participate in their education without interruption. “Every girl should be able to manage her menstrual health and continue her studies without fear or shame,” Dr. Bio stated at the event.
In addition to sanitary pads for girls, shoes were also distributed to boys, highlighting the importance of overall well-being for all pupils. The gesture aimed to foster a supportive environment for all students and acknowledges the shared responsibility in promoting gender equality and addressing issues like gender-based violence in schools.
The distribution event attracted significant community support, with attendance from local officials, including the Mayor of Bo City and the Resident Minister. The Mayor expressed the importance of such initiatives, stating, “This event marks a significant investment in our children’s future. We must ensure they have what they need to succeed.”
Also present was Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, a representative of Pujehun District, who praised Dr. Fatima Bio’s efforts through the “Hands Off Our Girls” initiative. “This initiative is crucial for empowering young girls and promoting a positive educational environment,” Tunis remarked.
It was reported that the success of the distribution not only addresses immediate health needs but also signifies a collective commitment from community leaders, educators, and stakeholders to invest in the future of the youth in Bo and Pujehun Districts.
With the ongoing support for such programs, beneficiaries and concerned citizens believed that there is hope for a brighter and more equitable future for all children in Sierra Leone.
