As over 700 teachers and head teachers set to be retired by August this year, the Government through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) plan to recruit over 2,500 new teachers.

Politico newspaper reported the Executive Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), Sorie Ibrahim Turay said there are plans for the recruitment of 2,800 teachers.

“In August when they go out, we expect the new cohort of teachers to go into payroll to replace them by the 1st of September 2023,” Turay said.

It is expected that 680 teachers will be retired by August 31, 2023 with payment of gratitude and monthly salary.

It is mandated by law that public servants are retired at age 60.

But there are concessions in the teaching field.

The TSC Executive Secretary said concessions will be given to teachers teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Mathematics (STEAM) to extend their tenure up to age 65

The recruits are expected to fill in the empty spaces and further fill the void.

Meanwhile, there are concerns from newly promoted teachers for the Government to increase their salary as per their promotion.

The teaching profession is among the several understaffed professions in Sierra Leone. A large of bulk teachers are being paid stipends and technically not under government payroll.
