The Sierra Leone stand-up comedy scene has been thrown into controversy and division as popular comedian Yemata abruptly terminated the appointment of the Acting President of the Comedian Faculty, just days after his appointment.
In an official statement, Yemata cited disregard for elders and failure to meet the expected conduct for the role as reasons for the sudden decision.
The statement, addressed to all stand-up comedians, declared the termination effective immediately and stated that the position would remain vacant until further notice.
“This is to formally notify all Stand-Up Comedians that the appointment of the current Acting President (Comedian Faculty) is hereby terminated, effective immediately, due to his disregard for elders and failure to meet the expected conduct for the role,” the statement read.
Yemata assured comedians that a proper forum would be arranged in due course to address the growing misunderstandings and divisions within the group.
The move has sparked mixed reactions within the comedy industry, with some comedians supporting Yemata’s decision, while others view it as an overreach of authority. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions within the stand-up comedy community, raising concerns about leadership structure and internal conflicts.
As comedians await the next steps, it remains to be seen how this drama will unfold and whether the Comedian Faculty can restore unity amid the ongoing controversy.
