The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, earlier this week visited imprisoned social commentator Zainab Sheriff, who is currently serving a four-year prison sentence following her conviction on charges of incitement and the use of threatening language.
According to the Mayor, the visit was both personal and reflective. She disclosed that their discussion focused on faith, family, the unique challenges faced by women, and their shared love for Sierra Leone.
Sheriff was recently sentenced after being found guilty on two counts—incitement and using threatening language—bringing to a close a case that attracted significant public attention and sparked widespread debate across the country.
Commenting on the four-year sentence imposed on Sheriff, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr raised concerns about what she described as inconsistencies in the application of the law. Her remarks have added to growing public discussions about whether justice is being administered consistently in similar cases.
The case continues to generate debate among citizens, legal observers, and civil society groups, particularly regarding issues of fairness, gender, and the broader implications for freedom of expression in Sierra Leone.
