A video circulating on social media depicting underground activities at the Koidu Limited Mining Company has sparked security concerns among citizens.

The video commentary revealed an explanatory view of how the underground looks like and how they move from the depth to the surface, it stated thus;

“I am coming up right now, it’s more than 10minutes coming from beneath. Have you seen the distance from where we go to take the  kimber and bring it up to the surface. We used to spent so many minutes and sometimes an hour. As you see, this is how and what the underground mining is designed for. It is not actually easy to be down here as we just have the faith of a man as without struggle there is no success.

Honestly, this place is not easy, I am in a very deep and big hole and it’s like street, a rotational tunnel which we use until we come up to the surface”

Speaking on the issue, Geologist Lansana Mohammed of the National Mineral Agency Kono emphasized that the company’s operations must remain within designated boundaries to prevent potential risks to the citizens, for which they have been operating in accordance for quite a long time now.

He clarified that the company primarily mines Kimberlite Pipe and operates differently from artisanal mining activities as well as reassured the public that regulatory agencies would not tolerate jeopardizing citizens’ lives.

Sulaiman Mustapha Korgie, the Community Liaison Officer of NMA Kono, confirmed that the company operates within its licensed 4.5-kilometer area, dismissing claims of encroachment. He revealed that, the people are protected and the company would always work in protecting the lives of the people at all times.

Batalomeo Membui, from the Office of National Security highlighted the seriousness of the situation, initiating an emergency DISEC meeting with company representatives and relevant sectors. The company assured authorities of adherence to safety protocols and pledged to educate the public about their activities.

Philip Sahr Sorboi, the Company’s Community Development Manager, acknowledged the authenticity of the video but maintained that operations remained within sanctioned areas, promising transparency in any future expansions.
