On January 10th, 2025, a four-story building under demolition collapsed on Malama Thomas Street in central Freetown, tragically resulting in the death of the lead contractor. Four other workers miraculously survived.
Swift action was taken by the emergency response team, including the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS), National Fire Force, National Disaster Management Agency, Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, Sierra Leone Police, and dedicated community youth volunteers.
According to the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, psychological support has been provided to bereaved family members, and ambulance services were used to transport the deceased to the Connaught Mortuary.
Authorities are urging residents to stay clear of the area for safety reasons until further notice. This incident underscores the importance of rigorous safety protocols in construction and highlights the need for continued vigilance to prevent such tragedies.
