A 30-year-old mother of four, identified as Bintu Kamara (not her real name), has alleged that she was forcibly subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) after a dispute with another woman over a man at the Moeba Community.
In an interview with Truth Media, Bintu claimed a group of soweis pinned her down after being reported to them. She alleged that the act was carried out against her will in the parlour of her former boyfriend.
According to her account, tensions had been ongoing for over a year between her, the man, and another woman involved. The situation escalated when the man’s other partner, along with his mother, reportedly summoned her before a chief of soweis. She said she was accused of being a “Gborka” -a term used to describe a woman who has not undergone FGM-and was warned against confronting the other woman.
Bintu alleged that the woman orchestrated the incident with members of the Sowei society in the community. “I don’t know if it was the man who told them that I had not undergone FGM,” she said, adding that preparations had already been made before she arrived.
She further explained that she was not feeling well after the procedure and was denied proper medical care. She claimed she was confined in a room at the residence of the chief sowei, identified as Nadewa, where sheep were also kept. She alleged that no food or medication was provided during her confinement.
Bintu stated that she eventually managed to escape after learning there were plans to move her to a village. She is currently in hiding.
The victim is calling on relevant authorities and organisations to intervene, stating that she is suffering and lacks family support due to her poor background.
She reported the matter to the police at Ross Road on May 28, where her statement was taken. Police have reportedly assured her that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
