A Nigerian engineer, Newton Johnson, has been remanded in custody for possession of cocaine at the Freetown International Airport in Lungi. The accused appeared before Magistrate Samuel Bangura of the Pademba Road Court No. 2 on Thursday, November 28, 2024, to answer charges of drug trafficking.

Johnson faces two counts of possessing prohibited drugs without lawful authority, in violation of Section 7(b) of the National Drugs Control Act of 2008. The charges stem from his alleged unlawful possession of 100 grams of cocaine discovered during a security check at the airport.

According to court records, the alleged offense occurred on Saturday, November 9, 2024, within the jurisdiction of the Port Loko Judicial District in Sierra Leone’s Northern Province. The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Dahila Wellington, has asserted that the evidence substantiates Johnson’s breach of the law.

During the court hearing, the charges were read to the accused, who was not legally represented at the time. Magistrate Bangura denied bail, citing the severity of the offense, and adjourned the matter to December 5, 2024, for further proceedings.

This case highlights Sierra Leone’s firm stance against drug-related offenses, particularly at key entry points like airports. The authorities continue to stress the importance of strict enforcement of anti-drug laws to curb trafficking and its related social challenges.

The Inspector General’s office has commended the swift action taken by airport officials, ensuring the case is prosecuted diligently to serve as a deterrent to others. Meanwhile, Johnson remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
