A leading figure of the opposition People’s Power in Peace (PPP) Movement, Abdul Will Kamara popularly known as Adebayor, has announced plans to return to Sierra Leone in what he described as a move aimed at confronting allegations linked to the August 10 unrest and engaging directly with President Julius Maada Bio.
Speaking in a statement reportedly shared publicly, Adebayor said he was prepared to return to the country after what he described as repeated calls by the Sierra Leone government for Dutch authorities to deport him to Sierra Leone.
According to Adebayor, he chose to remain in the Netherlands in the interest of peace and stability in Sierra Leone, insisting that his actions were motivated by a desire to avoid further tension in the country.
“I will be in Sierra Leone very soon to go face to face with President Bio,” Adebayor stated.
He further claimed to possess significant influence both within and outside Sierra Leone, asserting that his connections surpass those of President Bio. Despite the remarks, Adebayor maintained that his priority remains peace and national stability.
“I just want peace and stability to reign in Sierra Leone. That is why I decided to stay in Holland,” he said.
Addressing accusations surrounding the August 10 events, Adebayor challenged the government to provide evidence linking him to the unrest, which has remained a central issue in public discussions involving his name. He denied allegations made by the Sierra Leone Government linking him to the unrest.
“I want the government to bring evidence about what I did on August 10 because that is what they are talking about all the time,” he added.
He concluded by reaffirming his intention to return to Sierra Leone after the matter is addressed.
The Sierra Leone government has repeatedly maintained a strong position against individuals it believes was connected to the August 10 disturbances, although authorities have not publicly responded to Adebayor’s latest remarks at the time of publication.
The August 10 protests, which turned violent in several parts of the country in 2022, resulted in deaths, injuries, and widespread political tension, with the government accusing certain individuals like Adebayor and groups like his PPP of involvement in attempts to destabilise the country.
