The Government of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Korea on Thursday, 16 July 2026, signed a Record of Discussions to implement the K-Ricebelt Project, a US$5.6 million grant initiative aimed at modernising rice production in Rokupr, Kambia District.
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, and the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Kenyeh Barlay, together with representatives of the Government of the Republic of Korea and its implementing institutions.
Known as the Development of Africa Rice Cultivation Complex (Sierra Leone), the project will be implemented between 2026 and 2030 with funding from the Republic of Korea. It is designed to strengthen rice production through the establishment of a modern seed production complex, the rehabilitation of irrigation and seed processing infrastructure, the provision of agricultural machinery, and capacity-building programmes for farmers, researchers and government personnel.
The initiative supports the Government of Sierra Leone’s Feed Salone agenda, which seeks to boost domestic rice production, reduce dependence on imported rice, strengthen food security and improve the livelihoods of farming communities.
Upon completion, the project is expected to enhance seed production, improve agricultural productivity and position Rokupr as a key centre for modern rice cultivation, while contributing to national efforts to stabilise rice supplies and promote sustainable agricultural development.
