Mokonde Community in Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District, has officially welcomed a new Town Chief following the inauguration of Chief John Mena Goba. The ceremony, held on Saturday, 18th April 2026 at the Mokonde Town Barray, marked the end of a seven-year leadership struggle within the community.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including Paramount Chief Thomas B. Gbappi IV and his wife, Madam Umu Gbappi, as well as the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Njala University’s Mokonde Campus, Professor Patrick Sawyer, who chaired the occasion. Chief Ernest Bamba Ndomahina, Chairman of the Chiefdom Development Committee, attended as guest speaker.

Also present were the Fullah Tribal Head of Mokonde, Alhaji Sall, Temne Tribal Head Pa Kabia, Section Chief of Mokaba Section Chief Solomon John Kori, members of the press, and hundreds of community residents.

Proceedings began with Islamic prayers, followed by Christian devotions, symbolizing unity across religious lines. Speakers at the ceremony consistently emphasized the need for peace, unity, and collective development in Mokonde.

In his remarks, Section Chief Solomon John Kori highlighted the importance of reconciliation, urging the newly inaugurated chief to reunite with his former opponent, Jinnah G. Kebbie, in the interest of community harmony.

Delivering his welcome address, Professor Sawyer encouraged servant leadership, noting that a good leader should act like a parent—ready to serve the people rather than be served.

Guest speaker Chief Ernest Bamba Ndomahina underscored the critical role of peace in achieving sustainable development. He appealed to the people of Mokonde, especially its sons and daughters, to support the new chief and set aside past grievances.

In brief remarks, Paramount Chief Gbappi reminded the community that the choice of leadership rests with them. He emphasized that regardless of differing opinions, the people must now unite behind Chief Goba for the progress of Mokonde.

The ceremony concluded in a celebratory atmosphere, with refreshments and jubilation marking a new chapter of leadership and hope for the community.
