Market women at Makeni’s main market have called for urgent action to address the accumulation of uncollected waste, warning that the worsening sanitation situation is threatening public health and disrupting business activities.

The traders say large piles of garbage have remained at the market for more than a week, creating an unhealthy trading environment marked by foul odors and increasing concerns over the risk of disease outbreaks.

Speaking to ClarityPlus Media, several traders described the situation as unbearable, noting that the poor sanitary conditions are discouraging customers from visiting the market and negatively affecting their daily sales.

According to the traders, the prolonged failure to remove the waste has left both vendors and shoppers exposed to unsanitary conditions, prompting renewed calls for immediate intervention by the Makeni City Council and other relevant authorities.

They urged the council to promptly clear the accumulated garbage and establish a regular and reliable waste collection system to maintain a clean market environment, protect public health, and restore confidence among traders and customers.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns over environmental sanitation in one of Makeni’s busiest commercial centers, with traders emphasizing that sustained waste management measures are essential to ensuring a safe and healthy marketplace.
