The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has handed over a final cheque to the Chief Administrator of a public institution following the successful recovery of more than Le3 million, including accrued interest, that had been misappropriated from the institution’s coffers.
The handover marks the conclusion of the Commission’s asset recovery process and underscores its commitment to restoring stolen public funds to their rightful owners.
According to the ACC, the recovered amount comprises both the principal sum and the interest accrued during the recovery process. The funds were returned after the Commission completed its investigations and recovery procedures in line with its statutory mandate.
The Commission stated that the recovery forms part of its broader asset recovery efforts aimed at reclaiming the proceeds of corruption and returning them to affected public institutions.
The ACC noted that the successful recovery demonstrates the effectiveness of its strengthened asset recovery mechanisms, which are designed to ensure that individuals involved in corrupt practices do not benefit from illicitly acquired assets.
It further emphasized that asset recovery remains a key pillar of its anti-corruption strategy, promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance across Sierra Leone’s public sector.
The Commission added that it continues to support both central and local government institutions through its asset recovery initiatives while pursuing ongoing corruption-related cases before the courts.
Reaffirming its commitment to the fight against corruption, the ACC said it will continue to use all available legal mechanisms to recover stolen public assets, secure restitution for affected institutions, and hold perpetrators accountable under the law.
The Commission further stated that returning recovered funds to affected institutions not only restores public resources but also strengthens public confidence in the country’s anti-corruption efforts and serves as a deterrent against the misuse of public funds.
