The All People’s Congress (APC) leadership pays homage at the burial ceremony of Honourable Dalton Frederick Shears who died on April 3 2024 aged 93 years.

At the age of 31 years, D.F Shears made history as the very first APC member to be proclaimed as one of the Parliamentary Elections winners against the then-governing SLPP. The APC did not win the majority of seats that year & SLPP continued as the party in governance. However, since then, that parliamentary area of D.F. Shears (previously known as York District) has remained as a spiritual bastion of APC. When APC won the 1967 national elections, D.F. Shears was standing at the State House, with other APC stalwarts, next to Siaka Stevens when a pistol was pointed at them by Lt. Hinga Norman to stop the democratic handing over. That event marked the first Military Coup on our shores.

As the first Member of Parliament under an independent Sierra Leone constitution, Mr. Shears’ legacy as a founding member of the APC and a dedicated public servant was honored in a dignified ceremony.

His contributions to the nation, marked by his roles as Minister of Communications, Trade and Industry, Works, and Housing and Country Planning, were remembered with profound respect.

The APC family, united in grief, celebrated the life of a man who was not only a political pioneer but also a cherished individual with a love for swimming and hunting. His departure at the age of 93 is a poignant reminder of the enduring impact one person can have on the fabric of a nation.
