In a recent Twitter post, President Bio of Sierra Leone expressed his delight in presenting the High-level Opening Remarks at the UNFSS+2 session on “School Meals Powering Food Systems Transformation” in Rome.

During the session, he highlighted Sierra Leone’s exceptional experience as a leading example in using school feeding programs to foster education, inclusion, and economic development in the nation.

President Bio emphasized that since 2018, his government has been dedicated to implementing enabling policies and concerted efforts to roll out a transformational and sustainable school feeding program as part of the Free Quality School Education initiative. The program has been a collaborative effort with support from implementing partners such as the World Food Programme, Catholic Relief Services, Plan International, and various local organizations.

Remarkably, the school feeding program has been successful in feeding approximately 800,000 school children nationwide, with the government covering about 80% of the cost. This initiative has had a significant impact on various aspects of education, including increased school attendance, retention, and enrollment. Moreover, it has contributed to a reduction in stunting levels at the primary school level, indicating improved nutritional outcomes among young students.

Sierra Leone’s dedication to addressing the issue of childhood malnutrition and enhancing educational opportunities has led the country to join the School Meals Coalition in 2022. This move symbolizes the nation’s strong commitment to ensuring that every child, in collaboration with partners, will have access to a healthy, nutritious meal while attending school by the year 2030.

Looking towards the future, President Bio unveiled the flagship initiative called FEED SALONE, which is set to accelerate progress in boosting agricultural productivity and food security in the country over the next five years. This initiative aims to leverage agricultural potential, enhance food production, and create a sustainable ecosystem that supports both the school feeding program and overall food systems transformation.

As President Bio concluded his remarks at the UNFSS+2 session, the global community recognized Sierra Leone’s commendable efforts and looked forward to witnessing the positive impact of the FEED SALONE initiative on the nation’s educational landscape and food security.
