The Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Monina Sengeh, has provided vital office equipment to the office of the District Mammy Queen in Pujehun.
This symbolic gesture is aimed at bolstering the efforts of the Women of Wanjama to better serve their community.
The handing over ceremony was marked by an atmosphere of gratitude and optimism. Josephine Patricia Sowa, the District Coordinator of the Women of Wanjama, expressed her delight at the Chief Minister’s generosity, describing the donated items as a “blessing in disguise” for the women of Wanjama. The new office equipment, including computers, solar panels, chairs, tables, and cabinets, will empower the Women of Wanjama to more effectively address the challenges faced by women in the district, particularly those who are single mothers, widows, and struggling to provide for their families.
In her address, madam Sowa highlighted the pressing need for access to soft loans, which would enable the women to start their own businesses and achieve self-reliance, ultimately reducing their dependence on men. The women’s coordinator assured the Chief Minister of their unwavering support, pledging to contribute to the “Feed Saloon” initiative and construct their own farms to become self-sufficient.
District Mammy Queen Mamawa Kaikai expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his unwavering support for women’s empowerment since taking office. She noted that the provision of office equipment, such as computers, solar panels, and motorbikes, will greatly facilitate the women’s efforts to serve their community.
The event was also graced by the presence of Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Liberia, HE Ambassador Eddie Sidikie Massalay, who commended the Chief Minister’s generosity and commitment to promoting women’s empowerment. Massalay emphasized that the government’s efforts to support the women of Wanjama will continue as long as they remain in power.
In his remarks, Chief Minister Sengeh acknowledged the importance of women’s development and stated that the requested office space, furniture, and support are crucial steps towards empowering the Women of Wanjama. He assured the community that more initiatives are in the pipeline to further uplift the women of the region.
This initiative by the Sierra Leonean government underscores its dedication to fostering women’s empowerment and addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities. The Women of Wanjama are now better equipped to contribute to the socio-economic development of their region, paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future.
