The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr Isata Mahoi, has joined a high-level delegation comprising officials from the Government of Sierra Leone and the United Nations Country Team on a joint field visit to Moyamba, Kenema, and Mile 91 to assess ongoing initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and financial inclusion.
The visit provided a platform for direct engagement with women farmers and community groups benefiting from UN-supported programmes. Beneficiaries shared success stories, highlighting how access to farming inputs, skills training, and empowerment initiatives has significantly improved livelihoods, boosted food production, and strengthened household resilience.
In a show of solidarity, the Minister actively participated in farming activities alongside local women, demonstrating practical support while reaffirming agriculture as a critical pathway to women’s empowerment, economic independence, and sustainable national development.

She commended the communities for their commitment to environmentally friendly and sustainable practices, while encouraging more young women to take up agriculture as a viable means of self-reliance and economic growth.
The Minister also underscored the importance of girls’ education, urging families and communities to prioritise schooling. Addressing young girls, she emphasised the need for focus and ambition, reminding them that “the future is now in your hands.”
During the visit, the delegation engaged graduates of SEND Sierra Leone’s solar energy programme, discussing renewable energy development and skills acquisition. They also reviewed the impact of village savings and credit schemes, which continue to play a vital role in promoting financial inclusion and supporting women entrepreneurs.

Reaffirming Government’s commitment, the Minister highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration with the UN Country Team and other development partners to advance women’s empowerment, safeguard rights, promote education, and drive inclusive and sustainable development across Sierra Leone.
