In a groundbreaking move aimed at fostering technological innovation and empowering the youth, the Government of Sierra Leone, under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, has revealed plans to establish a cutting-edge Technology City in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone.
The announcement was made by Deputy Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Sannoh, during a high-level engagement with key stakeholders in Bo.
The proposed Technology City is poised to become a hub of learning, focusing on various technological disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). Its primary objective is to equip young minds with the skills and knowledge necessary to address the world’s pressing technological challenges. President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh have been instrumental in driving this initiative forward.
During the meeting on Saturday, October 14th, 2023, Deputy Minister Ibrahim Sannoh disclosed that the esteemed philanthropist Bill Gates has generously pledged a significant donation of 30 million dollars to Sierra Leone. This substantial funding injection will be dedicated to the development of Artificial Technology (AI) and innovation within the planned Technology City.
The proposed site for the Technology City, spanning 150 acres, was a focal point of discussion. Victor Korseh Hindowa, the District Council Chairman, and Koba Musa, the Mayor of Bo City Council, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to President Bio for selecting Bo as the epicenter for this transformative project. Both leaders pledged their unwavering commitment and support to ensure the successful establishment of the Technology City in their region.
Additionally, Paramount Chief Prof. Makavory of Tikonko Chiefdom reaffirmed his dedication to the initiative by offering 130 acres of land for the project. A visit to the designated site, located near Torwama Village and in close proximity to Njala University Bo Campus, confirmed the land’s suitability for the ambitious venture.
The establishment of this Technology City not only signifies a significant leap toward technological advancement for Sierra Leone but also aligns seamlessly with President Bio’s vision for human capital development. Bo, once the project comes to fruition, will be adorned with new appellations such as ‘Bo the Innovation City’ and ‘Bo the Technological Hub,’ highlighting its pivotal role in the country’s technological evolution.
As the project gains momentum, Sierra Leone eagerly anticipates the positive impact this Technology City will have on its youth, education system, agriculture, and various other sectors, propelling the nation into a brighter, technologically advanced future.
We need all that are needed. Technology city in Bos a pride for the country while anticipating the promised commercial city in Lungi.
They should collaborate closely with Njala University, as it is the sole public university with a dedicated School of Technology comprised of six departments: BSc Computer Science, BSc Business and Information Technology, BSc Electronic and Telecommunication, BSc Accounting, Information Technology, BSc Industrial Technology, and BSc Agriculture Engineering.
That’s a welcome news for the people of Sierra Leone most especially the southern region. We hope and pray that it comes to reality in the not far distance future.
We also appeal for the speedy completion of the Bo Mattru Jong road and the Bumpeh bridge.
Thank you President Bio for thinking of Bo for this great Technological advancement.
