The Government of Sierra Leone has intensified security preparations ahead of the upcoming Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit in Lungi, with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) leading efforts to ensure a safe and orderly environment for delegates, dignitaries, residents, and visitors.

As the country prepares to host the regional gathering, the SLP has deployed additional personnel, vehicles, and motorcycles while strengthening operational strategies aimed at maintaining public safety and security throughout the summit period.

Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu, who also serves as Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), on Thursday, 16 July 2026, outlined the security arrangements put in place to support the successful hosting of the event.

He said the measures include increased police visibility, enhanced patrols, improved traffic management, access control at strategic locations, and intelligence-driven operations to ensure effective coordination and public order during the summit.

The Police have also intensified community engagement and public awareness campaigns, urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement officers, adhere to traffic regulations, and respect established security protocols throughout the event.

The SLP noted that public support remains critical to creating a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere for all participants, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property in line with its constitutional mandate.

Through collaboration with other security institutions and stakeholders, the Police said it remains prepared to provide professional and efficient security services that will demonstrate Sierra Leone’s readiness to host major regional and international engagements.

The enhanced security arrangements are expected to contribute to a successful ECOWAS Summit while further strengthening Sierra Leone’s image as a peaceful and secure destination for global events.
