Security authorities have launched an investigation after five Guinean nationals, one of whom reportedly identified himself as a serving member of the Guinean military, were arrested while attempting to enter Sierra Leone through a border crossing in Kambia District.
The arrests were made on Thursday, 2 July 2026, during a routine security operation conducted by personnel monitoring movements along the border, according to the Office of National Security (ONS).
Speaking in an interview with Truth Media, the Strategic Communications Spokesperson for the Office of National Security (ONS), Abdul Karim Will, said security operatives intercepted the group during a border security operation after stopping and searching the vehicle in which they were travelling.
During the search, officers allegedly recovered a rifle and a military uniform, prompting the immediate arrest of all five occupants. The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Kambia Police Division, where they remain in custody as investigations continue.
Authorities confirmed that the individuals are all Guinean nationals. Preliminary inquiries indicate that one of the suspects claimed to be an active member of the Guinean armed forces.
Investigators are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding the group’s attempted entry into Sierra Leone and the purpose for transporting the firearm and military attire across the border.
The vehicle used by the suspects, along with the recovered items, has been seized as evidence to support the ongoing investigation.
The ONS said security agencies are continuing their inquiries to determine the intentions of the suspects and whether any laws were violated. As of the time of reporting, no formal charges had been announced, and officials said further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
