The Ministry of Internal Affairs has taken decisive steps to address the longstanding land dispute involving the Mandorbo, Gieo, and Mafors communities in Kaboro Chiefdom, Moyamba District, following recent tensions and violent clashes linked to competing claims over the land.

Leading the Government’s intervention, the Honourable Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, accompanied by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (South) and the Local Unit Commander, convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting aimed at de-escalating tensions and charting a path toward a peaceful and lasting resolution.

During the engagement, reports indicated that the recent unrest resulted in casualties and forced several residents to flee their communities over safety concerns.

In response, the Ministry guided discussions that led to a consensus among stakeholders on the need for an impartial and transparent process to determine rightful ownership of the disputed land.

As part of the Ministry-backed resolution framework, it was agreed that the survey report previously conducted by a surveyor assigned by the Resident Minister of the South will be thoroughly reviewed alongside a fresh assessment to be undertaken by the District Surveyor attached to the District Council.

To sustain momentum and ensure a structured process, the Ministry mandated the District Security Committee (DISEC), chaired by the Senior District Officer, to convene a follow-up meeting on Monday. The committee is expected to review all available evidence and make recommendations that will support a peaceful and permanent settlement.

In a significant development during the meeting, representatives of the Mafors community expressed regret over the recent incidents and appealed, through the Deputy Minister, for displaced members of the Mandorbo community to return home peacefully. They also reaffirmed their commitment to coexistence, peace, and mutual respect.

Reaffirming the Government’s position, the Deputy Minister emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring a fair, transparent, and enduring resolution of the dispute. He further disclosed that upon completion of the verification and adjudication process, the Ministry will organise a reconciliation meeting to officially communicate the findings, affirm rightful ownership of the land, and strengthen unity and understanding among the affected communities.
