Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, arrived in Kenema City for an unannounced working visit to inspect the new sexual offences court. The visit is said to be part of a major move to bolster judicial oversight and advance human rights protections in eastern parts of the country.

The surprise monitoring mission primarily focuses on inspecting the ongoing construction of Kenema District’s first-ever Sexual Offences Model Court. The specialised infrastructure project is part of a broader, nationwide judiciary initiative to provide victim-friendly, fast-tracked, and dignified legal proceedings for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Beyond checking the physical progress of the specialised facility, Chief Justice Kamanda is utilising the spot-check to directly assess accountability and operational efficiency within the regional justice system. The inspection includes a rigorous evaluation of the workplace commitment, punctuality, and overall performance of the Resident High Court Judge and the Magistrates currently serving across the Kenema District.

“Ensuring accountability and speeding up the delivery of justice, especially in highly sensitive cases, remains a top priority for our legal system,” a judicial source noted regarding the unannounced visit.

The surprise nature of the tour highlights the Chief Justice’s ongoing commitment to judicial reforms, decentralization, and keeping local courts running at peak performance. Further administrative updates and details on the construction timeline are expected to be released by the judiciary in the coming days.
