The NPAA, with support from the Government of Sierra Leone Budgetary Support Programme, has commenced a five-day workshop on the Integrated Management Effectiveness Tool (IMET) to assess five protected areas across the country.

The workshop, which started on Thursday, 16 July 2026, is being held at the Bombali District Council Hall in Makeni and is scheduled to end on Tuesday, 20 July 2026.

The assessment focuses on Western Area Peninsula National Park, Gola Rainforest National Park, Outamba-Kilimi National Park, Loma Mountains National Park, and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

IMET is an internationally recognised tool used to evaluate the effectiveness of protected area management. The process enables conservation managers and key stakeholders to assess current performance, identify existing challenges, and develop strategies aimed at improving biodiversity conservation.

The primary objective of the workshop is to review the current management status of the selected protected areas and determine whether there have been improvements or changes since the last assessment.

Findings from the exercise are expected to contribute to strengthening the management and conservation of Sierra Leone’s protected areas, while also supporting the country’s national and international biodiversity conservation commitments.
