The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has taken a major step forward in its digital transformation efforts with the acquisition of a new Tier III DMR communications system.

This marks a significant improvement over the outdated analogue system previously used by the force, addressing challenges with reliability, security, and efficiency.

The previous analogue system, plagued by unreliability, security concerns, and limited range, significantly hindered the SLP’s effectiveness. Recognizing these challenges, the Smart Policing Project was launched to upgrade communications to a more secure and efficient digital platform.

The new DMR system boasts an intelligent trunking system and 1,400 digital terminals, encompassing vehicle radios, portable hand radios, and base stations, creating a unified nationwide network.

This cutting-edge system, supplied by global public safety communications and security solutions leader Hytera, in collaboration with local partner Lehwefly Limited, is poised to revolutionize communication connectivity and fortify the SLP’s operational efficiency.

A standout feature of the DMR system is its robust security protocols, addressing the paramount need for secure communication within law enforcement agencies. This feature ensures the protection of sensitive information from unauthorized access, a crucial aspect in Sierra Leone’s commitment to maintaining public safety and combating crime.

Moreover, the upgraded system offers improved interoperability, enabling seamless collaboration between the SLP and other agencies involved in law enforcement and public safety. This heightened coordination will prove invaluable during emergencies and major incidents.

Beyond these advantages, the DMR system facilitates intelligence gathering and integration with other systems for database queries and information sharing. This capability positions the SLP to gather and analyze data more efficiently, leading to informed decision-making and targeted law enforcement efforts.
