The long awaited rehabilitation of the Low Cost Bridge at Old Road in the Eastern Area has officially begun today, May 24, 2025, after months of community concerns.

The repair efforts came in response to reports of a large fracture on one side of the bridge and partial collapse in another section, raising alarm among local residents. The damages have raised fears of potential disaster if not addressed promptly.

The bridge serves as the main entry and exit route for various vehicles, including trucks, kekes, okadas, and podapodas, operating between 7 AM and 10 AM. Due to Waka fine regulations, these vehicles have faced restrictions on using the low cost bridge route during the morning hours, making the bridge essential for local transport.

As the rainy season approached, community members grew increasingly anxious about the bridge’s stability. They called on the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) and the disaster management team to take immediate action to address the deteriorating situation.

Residents voiced fears that without prompt repairs, the bridge could pose a significant danger to commuters, potentially leading to a disaster.
