The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sierra Leone, convened a stakeholder planning meeting to discuss preparations for the potential return of Sierra Leonean migrants from the United States.

The meeting was prompted by social media reports and intelligence suggesting increased deportations of undocumented individuals from various countries, including Sierra Leone, by the U.S. government.

Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq., stated that the Immigration Department has been informed of potential deportations and has already conducted interviews with some individuals.

The meeting aimed to develop a unified roadmap for the professional and orderly reception of the deportees. Discussions focused on migration management and strengthening coordination and cooperation structures to ensure safe and orderly returns.

Pauline Macharia, Officer in Charge of the IOM office in Sierra Leone, clarified that while IOM is not directly involved in the deportation process, they are ready to support the government in assisting returning migrants. She emphasized IOM’s commitment to providing reintegration opportunities at both individual and community levels to help returnees rebuild their lives.

Macharia requested further information about the deportees, including demographics and numbers, and reiterated IOM’s commitment to addressing migration challenges through needs-driven solutions. She expressed a desire to deepen cooperation with the Sierra Leonean government on migration issues, supporting returnees’ social stability and psychosocial well-being.

Representatives from various ministries and departments, including Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Transnational Organized Crime, Transport and Aviation, and Social Welfare, participated in the meeting and contributed to the discussions. The meeting concluded with plans for further engagements to prepare for the potential arrival of deportees.

Recent reports indicate that a recent executive order by the U.S. President has initiated the deportation of 1,563 Sierra Leoneans as part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration. These individuals are among over 1.4 million people worldwide facing deportation, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
