One hundred and forty-nine Sierra Leonean migrants arrived today at Freetown International Airport in Lungi, returning from Agadez, Niger.

The government warmly welcomed them back, with Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor A. Bah and Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security Mohamed Rahman Swaray leading the reception.

These migrants voluntarily chose to return home through the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Program. The Sierra Leonean government, with support from IOM, facilitated their safe return.

“On behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone, I welcome you home safely,” Minister Bah declared. “You are safe here, and we will support you as you reintegrate into society.”

He expressed gratitude to IOM, the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UN), and other partners for their ongoing assistance. He then addressed the returnees, emphasizing their role in the country’s future.

“We encourage you to prioritize Sierra Leone,” Minister Bah urged. “The country’s well-being should always come before individual interests. We also call on you to join the fight against the K2 drug and raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration. As ambassadors to other young Sierra Leoneans, you can play a crucial role in shaping a brighter future for our nation.”

Minister Bah concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to collaborating with IOM throughout the reintegration process.
