In a compelling address to the United Nations Security Council on January 11, 2024, Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu, called for urgent global action to address the critical situation in Ukraine.

Expressing gratitude for the meeting, he underscored the need for humanitarian aid and renewed commitment to the UN Charter.

Ambassador Kanu acknowledged briefings by key figures and delved into the complexities of the conflict, expressing displeasure over Ukraine’s conviction in a previous session. He voiced concerns about the situation in Italy, emphasizing the sanctity of the UN Charter.

A crucial moment came when he pleaded for respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. Kanu highlighted the 23 months of conflict, lamenting massive displacement and casualties, especially among civilians and children.

Addressing the Security Council’s indecisiveness due to veto use, he called for collective responsibility to maintain international peace, recognizing Russia’s commitment but expressing concerns about the security situation in Ukraine.

Ambassador Kanu shared alarming statistics on the humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the impact on 41% of the Ukrainian population. Concerns extended to non-compliance with humanitarian law and the war’s prolonged effects on the environment, agribusiness, women, and children.

In a strategic plan, he outlined three crucial steps: avoiding heavy weaponry near civilians, regional efforts for critical aid, and urging conflict resolution while considering each party’s concerns.

Ambassador Kanu’s eloquent emphasis on addressing the humanitarian crisis and defending UN Charter principles serves as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility to bring lasting peace to Ukraine and the global community.
