The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has congratulated Dr. Williette P.R.O. James on her election as Secretary General of the Gender Council of the International Federation of Journalists (International Federation of Journalists), describing her elevation as a significant achievement for Sierra Leone and the global media community.

Dr. James was elected to represent SLAJ, the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), and Sierra Leone in the influential global body, which focuses on promoting gender equality and inclusion within the journalism profession worldwide.

According to SLAJ, her election reflects her extensive experience, strong advocacy for gender equality, and longstanding commitment to improving the welfare and rights of journalists. The Association noted that she is widely respected within national, regional, and international media circles for her leadership and professional contributions.

SLAJ President, Alhaji Manika Kamara, described the development as a proud moment for both the country and the journalism profession.

“Dr. James’s election is not only a personal milestone but also a significant moment for journalism in Sierra Leone. Her presence on the IFJ Gender Council will help amplify our shared commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and the empowerment of women in media globally,” he said.

Dr. James currently serves as Chairperson of the SLAJ Gender Advisory Panel, a position she has held since 2022. In her acceptance remarks, she reaffirmed her commitment to advancing gender justice and press freedom.

“As a journalist, scholar, and gender advocate, I have dedicated my career to advancing women’s leadership, defending press freedom, and addressing structural inequalities within our profession. I bring a record of principled action, collaborative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to fostering safer and more inclusive newsrooms. Together, we can strengthen gender justice across the global media landscape,” she stated.

SLAJ has described her election as a boost to Sierra Leone’s visibility and influence in international journalism and reaffirmed its full support as she assumes her new role.
