Sierra Leone’s Statistician-General, Andrew Bob Johnny, has left the country to attend the 56th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, scheduled to be held in New York, USA, from March 4 to 7, 2025.
The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1946, is the highest body of the global statistical system bringing together the Chief Statisticians from member states from around the world.
It is the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities, responsible for setting statistical standards and the development of concepts and methods, including their implementation at the national and international levels.
The annual gathering brings together global statistical leaders to discuss pressing issues in data governance, national accounts, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicator framework, population and housing censuses, and food security and nutrition, among others.
Sierra Leone Statistician-General is expected to engage in high-level discussions and contribute to enhancing global statistical standards that will impact national development policies.
As Sierra Leone prepares itself to undertake the decennial population and housing census, the SG is accompanied in New York by the Director of Censuses and GIS, Abdulai Brima, and the Director of Data Science, Theophilus Blaudfaust.
It is hoped that critical meetings with international partners and other census bodies will put Sierra Leone on a firm footing to kick off the 2030 global round of censuses.
