Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr. Eldred Taylor, recently addressed the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit Energy Ministers’ Session, emphasizing the Government of Sierra Leone’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions as a cornerstone of the energy transition.

Speaking on the theme “Sustainable Energy Solutions for a Sustainable Future,” Dr. Taylor highlighted President Julius Maada Bio’s strong interest in the summit’s focus, recognizing the significant challenges Sierra Leone faces in achieving energy security. He pointed out that, like many countries in the Global South, Sierra Leone grapples with volatile market dynamics, infrastructure deficits, and the impacts of climate change.

Dr. Taylor noted that the outdated and inadequate infrastructure in Sierra Leone limits access to reliable energy, particularly in rural areas. He also emphasized the country’s dependence on imported fuel, which exposes it to the volatility of global energy markets, leading to issues of affordability and stability.

To overcome these challenges, Dr. Taylor called for collaborative efforts, especially through regional and international partnerships, with a focus on South-South cooperation. He highlighted a key project initiated in 2017: a $78 million, 225KV Transmission Line, aimed at improving the country’s energy infrastructure.

During the session, Dr. Taylor stressed the importance of sustainable resource allocation for building a resilient energy system. He highlighted Sierra Leone’s progress in energy transition, including investments in renewable energy sources and the adoption of innovative models to build resilient supply chains, mitigate climate-related risks, and leverage low-cost financing.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Taylor underscored that addressing Sierra Leone’s energy challenges requires a multifaceted approach involving strategic investments, innovation, and collaboration. He also noted that reforms in the energy sector are closely linked to the country’s Feed Salone agenda, driving progress towards a sustainable and secure energy future.
