Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, delivered a lecture at the Aspire Artemis Foundation High-Level Forum during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in bridging the global digital divide and creating opportunities for young people.
Speaking on the theme “Culture, Health, Trade and the Role of Artificial Intelligence: Bridging the Digital Divide through Collective Action Partnerships for Young People,” Minister Sannoh reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing digital inclusion.
He emphasized that AI must be used as a tool to expand opportunity rather than reinforce inequality, citing its potential impact on healthcare, trade, cultural preservation, and inclusive economic growth.
“AI should not widen inequalities; instead, it must be harnessed to create a fairer, more inclusive digital future where young people and women stand as equal leaders in shaping innovation,” Minister Sannoh said.
The forum brought together students, young professionals, and global changemakers to discuss innovation and equity. During a dialogue with Michael Sheldrick, Author and Co-Founder of Global Citizen, discussions focused on how advocacy, data, and youth-led innovation can accelerate poverty eradication and sustainable development.
The exchange also identified opportunities for collaboration between Sierra Leone and global advocacy networks to amplify youth voices and mobilize resources for digital equity.
Later, Minister Sannoh participated in the High-Power Africa Panel – Youth & Women Driving Digital Transformation – alongside African leaders and innovators. He outlined Sierra Leone’s investments in digital skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation, positioning youth and women as central drivers of Africa’s digital future.
The forum concluded with a call to action, stressing that bridging the global digital divide requires collective partnerships and bold leadership. Sierra Leone underscored its conviction that empowering young people and women is both a moral duty and a strategic pathway to sustainable growth, equity, and peace.
