Popular Sierra Leonean Writer and Media Personality, Vickie Remoe has reminded Sierra Leoneans to respect what the courts says even when they may not agree with the outcome and also reminded Citizens that they have the power of memory.

First and foremost look out for yourself.

No lef blow mind tay you give dem reason for take advantage pan you.

Talk half lef Af en no to to all man for talk because some people dem na spy, na dem day go call name.

Becareful.

My heart goes out to all the young people who have been sentenced to prison today. Three years no to three days.

My heart goes out to their mothers, their fathers, their children, their wives, their husbands, their boyfriends, their girlfriends, their friends, their employees, their business partners, and all the people whose lives are left empty when these kinds of things happen.

I know what it is to know that what is happening to your loved one is not what they deserve. I know how it feels to feel helpless in the face of a power that is bigger than you. I know how it feels to beg and for people to say that what your loved one is going through is what they deserve. I know the rage, and brokenness. Like there is no God to call.

As citizens we must respect what our courts say even when we may not agree with the outcome. The court is always right no matter what we may feel. If there may be means for an appeal that is also for the court to decide.

While the court has the power so too do citizens but it is a different kind of power. Citizens have the power of memory. Choose to remember!

You can choose to remember today. You can choose to remember the swiftness and heaviness with which the police and the court handled this matter which had to do with young lives. You can choose to remember the silence from elected officials when it had to do with young lives. You can choose to remember the way the media reported painted certain people as gang members because of the kind of art they make. You can choose to remember that there are people who are going to sleep in prison tonight and for 36 months because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Choose to remember!

Very soon they will come with new leone and try to give you new money for make you put am day—thop! Anybody give you money as gift, take the money.

But remember today.

Very soon they will come to tell you that they have done so and so for you and you for put am day—thop! Listen when they talk, shake your head and say yes na true you don tok, you don do.

But remember today.

Very soon they will come with t-shirts and ask you to take your youthful energy to the streets. They’ll give you Vody and Redbull. Take the t-shirt. Drink the drink.

But remember today.

And then, your time will come. You will be alone between the cardbox. You will have their faces and colors on the paper. As you stand there exercising your right as a citizen of this country, remember what you can’t express today.

Take a deep breath and whatever you feel matches your mood today, have your say—thop!

Until then…stay safe, stay calm, and stay peaceful.
