The Opposition Chief Whip, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, has strongly criticized the government’s failure to address the ongoing power crisis in the country.
He accused the administration of prioritizing rhetoric over concrete action, leaving millions of citizens to suffer from power shortages, poverty, and starvation.
Hon. Kamara took direct aim at Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, a key figure in the energy sector, accusing him of misleading the public while failing to provide tangible solutions. He recalled that during the previous parliamentary session, when the power crisis first emerged, Dr. Yumkella was present but did not offer any meaningful contributions to resolving the issue. Instead, Hon. Kamara asserted, his involvement in the energy sector has only worsened the situation, leading to more hardships for Sierra Leoneans.
A major point of contention, according to the Opposition Chief Whip, is the stalled Bubuna Phase Two project. He criticized the government for deliberately abandoning this key energy project, largely due to its location in the Northern Region. Had the project been completed, he argued, it could have provided a viable solution to the country’s persistent electricity shortages.

Hon. Kamara further condemned the exorbitant electricity tariffs imposed on citizens, stating that despite their resilience in paying these high fees, they continue to receive inadequate and unreliable service. He highlighted the recent tragic fire at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, in Freetown. The fire, reportedly caused by power disruptions, underscores the severity of the crisis.
The Opposition Chief Whip emphasized that the issue extends beyond Freetown, affecting other major towns such as Makeni, Bo, Lunsar, Magburaka, and Kenema. He expressed frustration that, despite the appointment of several ministers to address the energy sector, the government has failed to implement any meaningful reforms.

Exactly sir. The blackout is just getting worse and we’re completely tired of this useless government and their excuses.
