The leadership of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has held internal consultations on recent political developments surrounding the possible return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma from exile, reaffirming the party’s commitment to constitutional governance, due process, and national unity.
The consultations, led by the SLPP National Chairman, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, involved members of the party’s National Elders Council and focused on the constitutional and political implications of ongoing discussions relating to the former President.
In a public notice dated 13 July 2026, the party stated that participants stressed the importance of ensuring that all parliamentary and governmental actions are carried out in accordance with the Constitution of Sierra Leone while safeguarding due process and promoting peace, stability, and national cohesion.
“Our discussions underscored the importance of ensuring that all parliamentary and governmental actions are guided by the Constitution of Sierra Leone while safeguarding due process and promoting national unity, peace and stability,” the statement said.
The meeting also reaffirmed the SLPP’s commitment to democratic governance and its responsibility to uphold constitutional order while preserving peace across the country.
According to Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, the deliberations further considered President Julius Maada Bio’s responsibilities as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He said discussions reflected on the principles contained in the ECOWAS Revised Treaty and the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, both of which advocate constitutional governance and the peaceful resolution of political differences.
Songa emphasized the importance of President Bio continuing to advance peace, stability, and national cohesion through constitutional and democratic processes.
The National Elders Council also encouraged the National Chairman, the party’s National Executive, and SLPP members at home and abroad to continue supporting President Bio’s efforts to promote peace, unity, and inclusive national dialogue in the interest of all Sierra Leoneans.
The consultations come amid sustained national interest in developments relating to the possible return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma, with political stakeholders continuing to monitor the situation closely.
