Sierra Leone international Kallum Cesay delivered a dramatic extra-time winner on Friday night as Salford City defeated Grimsby Town in a thrilling play-off encounter to secure a place in the English League Two Play-Off final at Wembley.

Cesay struck the decisive goal during extra time at the Peninsula Stadium, sending home supporters into wild celebrations after a fiercely contested match. Grimsby Town had fought back to lead 2-1 on the night through a second-half brace from Jaze Kabia, levelling the tie at 3-3 on aggregate after Salford’s 2-1 first-leg victory earlier in the week.

In that first-leg clash away from home, Cesay had also opened the scoring for Salford, continuing his influential form during the club’s promotion push.

The victory now sets up a crucial Wembley showdown against Notts County on May 25, with Salford City aiming to secure promotion to English League One for the first time in the club’s history.

Cesay’s heroic performances have come during an emotional period for the midfielder, who recently lost his father just days before the play-offs began. Teammates and fans have since praised the Sierra Leonean for his resilience and composure under immense personal pressure.

The talented attacking midfielder has endured a difficult journey in recent years. A product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy, Cesay was once regarded as one of Sierra Leone’s brightest young prospects, especially after making his debut for the Leone Stars at a young age.

However, injuries disrupted his progress and eventually saw him fall out of the national team setup before being released by Tottenham in 2023. He later underwent unsuccessful trials with German side Werder Bremen and English club Huddersfield Town before rebuilding his career at Wealdstone FC.

This season, Cesay has enjoyed a resurgence with Salford City, making 25 League Two appearances while scoring five goals and providing six assists in an impressive campaign that could yet end in promotion glory at Wembley.
