Delegation from the Liberia Kickball Federation (LFK) paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, and his team in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
In his briefing, Director Steven Keifala explained that he had been contacted by the Liberian team regarding their visit and the potential for collaboration between the two nations to fully establish the sport of kickball.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, National President of the Liberia Kickball Federation, Ambassador Emmanuel Surprise Whea, expressed his deep appreciation to the NSA for its warm hospitality.
“We are in Freetown to establish a partnership with the NSA for the promotion and development of kickball. We aim to elevate the game to the level of a Mano River Union Games event soon,” President Whea said.
He went on to provide a brief history of the sport in Liberia, noting that kickball was first introduced in 1964 by a female Physical and Health Education teacher at a girls’ school. With support from the Liberian government, the sport was officially established nationwide in 1994 and is now played across Liberia. The country hosts an annual national championship, and kickball is also featured in inter-ministerial games.
In response, NSA Chief Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai welcomed the delegation and expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration.
“As a government regulatory body, our role is to support all legally recognized sporting associations in Sierra Leone. The NSA is open to your idea of working together to establish kickball here, and we will collaborate in this direction,” he affirmed.
Dr. Abdulai also took the opportunity to highlight the Africa Traditional Games initiative, in which Sierra Leone is playing a leading role. He encouraged the Liberian delegation to participate in the event when the time comes.
Finally, the delegate will engage with other relevant stakeholders like the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, and officials at the Ministries of Basic and Higher Education, among others.
