The head of media for the Sierra Leone Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brima Kamara, has dismissed the burning issue regarding the presence of convicted Dutch cocaine baron Jos Leijdekkers in Sierra Leone. In this context, the police spokesman was providing a briefing about the efforts the police were making to combat drug trafficking, particularly following reports about a boat suspected of being used in illicit drug operations, reportedly owned by Tandeen Fishing Company, a subsidiary of the larger Tandeen Group of Companies.
During the briefing, a journalist inquired about what the police were doing in connection with the presence of the main cocaine figure, Jos Leijdekkers. The police spokesman stated that he had no opinion and preferred not to discuss the issue.
When asked to clarify if Umar Sheriff is still in Sierra Leone, the police spokesman responded, “I don’t know. If I get any more information, I will let you know.”
The journalist pressed on, questioning why, if the police are on top of the situation, Umar Sheriff has not yet been located, especially since the Dutch government has written to Sierra Leone for his extradition so he can serve his jail term.
The police spokesman replied, “Let’s leave the Umar Sheriff issue. The Umar Sheriff matter will be handled at the state-to-state level. The Umar Sheriff issue is another level. I don’t have much to offer on the Umar Sheriff issue.”
This statement ties back to the initial dismissal of concerns regarding Leijdekkers, highlighting ongoing challenges in addressing drug trafficking and the complexities surrounding high-profile cases like that of Umar Sheriff.
