Passengers traveling on the early morning scheduled ferry from Lungi to Freetown were left distressed on Tuesday after the vessel reportedly broke down shortly after take-off.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred just moments after passengers, including commercial bike riders and their motorcycles, had boarded and the vessel began its departure from the Lungi terminal. The ferry allegedly experienced a sudden mechanical failure mid-launch, forcing it to halt unexpectedly.

Several passengers expressed frustration and disappointment, noting the inconvenience and safety concerns caused by the breakdown. Some described the experience as frightening due to the abrupt nature of the malfunction.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the malfunction, but preliminary indications point to a technical fault. No injuries were reported, and efforts were immediately made to stabilize the situation by transferring people on another ferry to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

The breakdown comes amid ongoing public concerns surrounding the maintenance and reliability of sea transport services between Lungi and Freetown a critical route for travelers, airport users, and goods moving in and out of the capital.

Passengers are calling on the government and ferry operating companies to improve safety standards and ensure routine maintenance to restore public confidence in the service.
