The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) and a panel of medical experts, has concluded a Mortality Review Meeting on Mpox-related deaths. The review aimed to examine each case, identify contributing factors, and recommend measures to prevent future loss of life.
The exercise focused on clinical, operational, and systemic aspects, including delays in diagnosis, referral gaps, and case management challenges. Expert presentations by Dr. Lakkoh, Dr. Agnes Bangura, Dr. Aminata Thomas, and Dr. Darlinda Jiba informed a set of actionable, district-sensitive recommendations. These include enhancing Mpox case management protocols, strengthening referral systems, expanding frontline health worker training, promoting timely health-seeking behavior, and integrating maternal health surveillance with outbreak response.
Officials emphasized that the review reflects a commitment to transparency, accountability, and epidemic preparedness. By turning lessons from past deaths into targeted interventions, the Ministry and NPHA aim to build a stronger, more responsive health system for all.
