A viral list claiming to show the “Top 10 African countries with the strongest currencies in August 2025” ranking São Tomé & Príncipe first and Sierra Leone second is fake.
The post, shared by Sierra Leone’s State House Communications Director Myk Berewa, misrepresents some of Africa’s weakest currencies as the strongest.
Facts:
• The Sierra Leonean Leone trades at around 20,970 SLL = 1 USD, making it one of Africa’s weakest currencies, not the second strongest.
• São Tomé’s dobra is also weak, at about 22 STD = 1 USD.
• The true strongest currencies in Africa are the Tunisian Dinar (≈ 3 per USD), Libyan Dinar (≈ 5 per USD), Moroccan Dirham (≈ 9 per USD), Seychellois Rupee, and Botswana Pula.
• Business Insider Africa has never published the ranking being circulated.
Sharing false financial information misleads the public and undermines trust.
Sierra Leone’s leadership should prioritize accurate reporting and focus on strengthening the Leone through real economic reforms not fake rankings.
