The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, has put forward a proposal to establish new localities within the Freetown municipality.

According to Hon. Tamba Lamina, the Minister of Local Government, this initiative comes at an opportune time, as residents of Freetown have long expressed the need for further administrative subdivisions. Establishing new localities with dedicated local administrations aims to enhance representation and service delivery to the people.

When asked about the timeline for the implementation of this proposal, Minister Lamina stated that the process is currently underway, with consultations ongoing involving local residents, development partners, and key stakeholders.

He emphasized that community engagement remains a priority to ensure that the reforms reflect the aspirations of Freetown’s citizens.
In response to a letter penned by the Mayor of Freetown and circulated on social media, Minister Lamina expressed his views candidly.

He stated that he could not respond to the open letter through social media, as it was not the appropriate channel for official communication. “As a city mayor, you should pursue more professional means of dialogue rather than posting open letters on social media, expecting a minister to respond,” Lamina remarked.

The Minister clarified that the proposal to create new localities is not intended to divide Freetown but rather to strengthen the bonds between residents and their local councils. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive governance and improving local administration for the benefit of all Freetonians.
