Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay announced the official commencement of the implementation of Sierra Leone’s Criminal Procedure Act 2024 during the Civic Day Series in Makeni, organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.
He confirmed that five individuals allegedly connected to the killing of Reverend Father Amadu in Kenema have been arrested and formally charged, making them the first to face prosecution under the new law.
Sesay described the Act as providing a framework for efficient, fair, and clear criminal proceedings. He also spoke about the constitutional review process, highlighting efforts spanning more than two decades and acknowledging the contributions of past administrations, including Presidents Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and Ernest Bai Koroma, through the Peter Tucker and Justice Cowan Commissions, which gathered input from citizens nationwide.
“This has been a national project, not one of a single government,” Sesay said, emphasizing that the review seeks to align the 1991 Constitution with the aspirations of a new generation. He confirmed that President Dr. Julius Maada Bio is committed to completing the constitutional review, which will include provisions such as the Free Quality Education Program, aimed at guaranteeing access to education for every Sierra Leonean.
