Prominent, yet controversial, Sierra Leonean politician Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has publicly offered to return to the country to assist national authorities in addressing the severe proliferation of illicit drugs, including cocaine and the synthetic drug kush.
Mansaray, the former leader of the Alliance Democratic Party (ADP), issued his offer on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, amidst intensified government efforts to combat drug trafficking and the rising public health threat.
The politician reiterated a previous pledge made on May 14, 2025, President Julius Maada Bio’s birthday, in which he had vowed to support a comprehensive investigation to restore Sierra Leone’s international image, which he argues has been tarnished by the drug trade.
In his public statement, Kamarainba called on citizens to circulate his message to ensure it reaches President Bio directly, stating his readiness to cooperate with national authorities.
“I will promote public awareness campaigns on prevention and rehabilitation and Advocate for multi-sectoral policy responses combining law enforcement, public health, and social services,” Kamarainba declared. He also offered to participate in a formal, independent investigation into drug networks and act as a liaison between political actors, civil society, and international partners.
The offer arrives at a time when Kamarainba faces legal complications in Sierra Leone. He is currently out of the country following his release on a judicial pardon after serving nearly four years of a sentence for the sexual penetration of a minor—a conviction he and his supporters have long claimed was politically motivated.
On February 28, 2025, the High Court of Sierra Leone issued a second bench warrant for his arrest after he repeatedly failed to appear in court. A warrant was also issued for his surety.
The politician is appealing the 2021 conviction for the sexual penetration of a minor, for which he served over two years in prison before being released on a judicial pardon in late 2024. Following his release, he relocated to the United States and resumed vocal criticism of the Bio administration.
In January 2025, Mansaray made a public post on social media accusing President Bio of attempting to “eliminate him” for his political advocacy. He shared photos of himself emaciated from his time in detention, stating, “I want the public to understand the pain I endured,” and maintained his innocence, claiming his imprisonment was politically motivated.
The Bio administration has not officially responded to Kamarainba’s latest offer to assist.
