The National Youth Commission (NAYCOM) and the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to train and certify 1,000 young Sierra Leoneans in maritime-related occupations a major initiative aimed at boosting youth employment and skills development.

The agreement, signed this week in Freetown, will initially provide 250 young people with internationally recognized maritime skills, laying the foundation for increased participation in the global seafaring industry.

The training program is expected to enhance job readiness, expand professional opportunities, and contribute to the growth of Sierra Leone’s emerging blue economy.

NAYCOM Commissioner Joseph Maada Lahai described the partnership as a “historic milestone,” highlighting its potential to transform youth empowerment efforts across the country.

SLMA Deputy Executive Director Emmanuel B.A. Lansana reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to aligning the program with President Julius Maada Bio’s Game Changer agenda, which prioritizes human capital development and youth employment.

The agreement represents a strategic shift toward equipping young Sierra Leoneans with competitive skills for the international maritime sector, which holds vast employment opportunities.

Both institutions have pledged to ensure the training’s quality and global relevance, with implementation expected to begin soon.
