Former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and senior SLPP stalwart, Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, has donated US$50,000 (Le 1.2 billion) in support of President Julius Maada Bio’s national campaign against drug abuse, particularly the fight against the dangerous substance known as Kush.
Dr. Tunis made the donation during the official launch of the “Say No To Kush” campaign, organized by One Industry Salone a collective of creative industry stakeholders committed to using art, entertainment, and public advocacy to combat substance abuse across Sierra Leone.
The event brought together prominent figures, including the Minister of Youth Affairs, the Entertainment Ambassador, and other dignitaries, all united in their shared resolve to tackle the country’s escalating drug crisis.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Tunis described the growing use of Kush as “a national emergency that threatens the country’s youth and future,” stressing that every Sierra Leonean must take responsibility in addressing the scourge.
His donation, he noted, was both a personal commitment and a gesture of solidarity with President Bio’s government in its ongoing efforts to save lives and restore hope.
Organizers of One Industry Salone expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Tunis for his leadership and generosity, describing his contribution as a significant boost to the campaign’s outreach and rehabilitation efforts. They also appealed for stronger government collaboration and public participation in what they called “a collective fight for Sierra Leone’s future.”
“The fight against Kush requires more than words; it demands action, unity, and compassion,” one of the organizers emphasized. “This campaign aims to empower communities, educate young people, and mobilize national action against drug abuse.”
The “Say No To Kush” initiative represents a major step in Sierra Leone’s broader strategy to curb substance abuse and rehabilitate affected youth through community-driven awareness, counseling, and prevention programs.
